چکیده

Both the X-ray luminosity-temperature (L-T) relationship and the iron abundance distribution of galaxy clusters show intrinsic dispersion. Using a large set of galaxy clusters with measured iron abundances we find a correlation between abundance and the relative deviation of a cluster from the mean L-T relationship. We argue that these observations can be explained by taking into account the range of cluster formation epochs expected within a hierarchical universe. The known relationship of cooling flow mass deposition rate to luminosity and temperature is also consistent with this explanation. From the observed cluster population we estimate that the oldest clusters formed at z > ∼ 2. We propose that the iron abundance of a galaxy cluster can provide a parameterization of its age and dynamical history.

Stellar spectra derived from current multiple-object fiber-fed spectroscopic radial-velocity surveys, of the type feasible with, among other examples, AUTOFIB, 2dF, HYDRA, NESSIE, and the Sloan survey, differ significantly from those traditionally used for determination of stellar abundances. The spectra tend to be of moderate resolution (around 1 ˚ A) and signal-to-noise ratio (around 10-20 pe...

Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT The recent discoveries of X-ray and optical counterparts for GRBs, and a possible discovery of a host galaxy, implies that a direct measurement of the red-shift of some GRBs host galaxies is eminent. We discuss the implications of such measurements. They could enable us to determine the GRBs luminosity distribution, the variation of the rate of GRBs with cosmi...

The universality of the globular cluster luminosity function (GCLF) contrasts the variation seen in the specific frequency (SN). The variation in SN has been shown to follow a linear relation with LX for brightest cluster galaxies Blakeslee 1997. Further, the variation of SN with galactic radius within individual giant ellipticals is seen to be a constant fraction of the gas density McLaughlin ...

We present spectroscopy of two clusters in the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822. From these we deduce an age for Cluster VII of 11 −3 Gyr and [Fe/H] = −1.95±0.15 dex. Cluster VII appears to be an analog of the metal-poor galactic globular clusters. Cluster VI is found to be much younger and more metal rich, with an age of approximately 2 Gyr. Its derived metallicity, [Fe/H] ≈ −1.0 dex, is compar...

We have obtained optical spectrophotometry of 11 H II regions in the polar ring of NGC 2685 (the Helix galaxy), and have used these data to study the physical characteristics of the polar-ring H II regions. The H II regions have normal spectra with no suggestion of unusual density, temperature, extinction, or composition. Semi-empirical calculations yield high oxygen abundance estimates (0.8–1....
